Favela tour in Rio de Janeiro

A guided walk through Rocinha or Vidigal with a local guide, the best way to see how most of Rio actually lives.

A favela tour takes you into one of Rio's hillside communities, where around one in five Cariocas lives. With Enzo you visit Rocinha, the largest favela in Brazil, or Vidigal, the community above Ipanema with one of the best views of the city. You walk the narrow alleys with a guide from the community, stop at local shops, art projects and viewpoints, and hear how life works on the hill.

Enzo checks the situation in the community on the morning of the tour and only goes where it is calm. Tours are private, so you set the pace and can ask anything. Part of the price goes to the local guide and the projects you visit.

What's included

  • Pickup and drop-off at your hotel
  • Local guide from the community
  • Motorbike taxi or van up the hill (optional)
  • Stops at a viewpoint, local art projects and shops

Questions and answers

Is a favela tour in Rio safe?

Yes, with a guide who works with the community. Enzo checks the situation in Rocinha or Vidigal on the morning of the tour and changes the plan if needed. You stay with the guide, keep your phone out of sight in busy alleys, and only photograph people after asking.

Which favela do you visit, Rocinha or Vidigal?

Both are possible. Rocinha is the largest favela in Brazil, busy and full of life. Vidigal is smaller and quieter, with a view over Ipanema and Leblon. Enzo picks the one that fits your interests and the situation on the day.
